Self-Catering 6 Berth Barge in Southern France on the Canal du Midi

on an idyllic rural mooring amongst the vineyards near Le Somail, a pretty
little village on the Cathar castle trail at the foot of the Pyrenees 35km from
the sea, with the option to



Cycle, Kayak or Walk along the 17c tree lined Canal Du Midi towards
Carcassonne, Narbonne or Beziers ahead of the Eco Barge transporting
your things and bed for the night. 

There a very few places in the world that share the following attributes:

At the foothills of two moutain ranges, the Black mountains and Pyrenees.

World famous wine growing area (sunny but very green and not too hot)

Beautiful beaches nearby (Leucate, famous for Mediterranean windsurfing)

Surrounded by sites of high historical interest (12c Cathar castles and towns)

Beautiful, cool, tree lined, 17c Canal (Du Midi, perfect for cycling-walking)

4 airports within 100 km (Beziers - Carcassonne - Perpignan - Montpellier)

The wind-turbine and solar panels give the 22m 1921 Dutch EcoBarge self- sufficiency thus the freedom to moor in the most beautiful and remote places.

1/2 km up the Canal Du Midi is Le Somail with a barge shop, farm shop,
restaurants and a supermarket nearby.

The crystal clear River Cesse, 1 km down the canal, is popular with
picnickers and swimmers.
 
5 km on is the historic village of Salleles d’Aude of "Labarinth" fame.  



Carcassonne Cité, Cathar Castles and Mediterranean Beaches are popular
day trips as are Beziers Cathederal-40 km and Narbonne Market (thu/sun)-
17 km along the canal.



The lounge has a partitioned double sofabed, wood burning stove, sat-tv and 3g internet.



Bio oil-fired centrally heated open plan dining and kitchen area.

Twin bunk-bed cabins in the bow.             Marine toilet and solar heated rainwater shower.



We’ll meet guests arriving at Narbonne train station with up to 3 bikes on
our trailer for those not bringing their own.

We’ll then all cycle the 17 km back together to the barge along the canal.

Alternatively: 1220, 1620 and 1820 (not sun) bus or €30 taxi to Le Somail.

We don’t rent out bikes or kayaks but you can buy one of ours at face value
e.g. €100 and if undamaged, we’ll buy it back for the same amount.
